Ducati and Elizabeth Raab team up for ultimate garage art

Designers have been coaxing organic shapes out of cold metal and composites for generations, and while few are so bold as to recreate the bombshell lines that we saw on display in the early ’50s, the tradition doesn’t show signs of slowing up any time soon.

Nowhere is that more true than the realm of motorcycles. Unburdened by cumbersome safety regulations, motorcycle artists are able to bend tanks and frames to whatever shape they so desire. More often than not, those lines are lifted straight from the human body.

Ducati has just partnered with fine-art photographer Elizabeth Raab to explore that relationship a little further. Raab set about combining some of the manufacturer’s more lust-worthy creations with the arching forms of beautiful models. The parallels between the two are absolutely stunning, especially as viewed through Raab’s lens work.

Ducati is offering limited-edition, individually numbered prints for sale in a variety of sizes, so if you like what you see as much as we do, head on over to the Duc site and get while the getting’s good. Just be warned, not all of the shots are exactly safe for work.

Representing nearly ten percent of all motorcycle owners worldwide, female riders have remained the fastest growing segment in the two-wheeled marketplace for several years in a row. But being a chick on a bike has not always been quite so socially acceptable – especially when you don't like to play by the rules!

When Margaret Gast made her first attempt at conquering the Monodrome (a.k.a. 'The Wall of Death') back in the early 1900s, no one would have dreamed of sporting the pink leather chaps or high-healed riding boots found in modern motorbike dealerships. In fact, it would not be until the age of disco when a women named Kerry Kleid fought for her right to race that the AMA gave out its first professional license to a female rider. It probably didn't hurt that she had a reputation of being able to wheelie whatever she was riding...

Those pioneering women of motorcycle stunt might just say that girls like Tena "Stunt Blondie" Colbert, JoJo Farmer or Suzanne "Gixxie" Hamilton have it too easy these days. But the truth is, these girls are still raising their front wheels in a largely male dominated sport. And, at least judging by the photos, we don't think they will be taking a back seat anytime soon. Wakan 1640 - New French V-Twin Motorcycle

A new motorcycle company from France? It looks that way and their first bike is pretty sweet. Wakan Motorcycles has produced the Wakan 1640, a single seat, V-Twin powered sport bike built around the AC Cobra idea of dropping a big American powerplant into a sporty European frame. Joel Domergue, the man behind Scorpa, a company known for some excellent trials motorcycles, and an expert trials rider himself, figured it was time to sell the company which left him with some cash in his pocket and ideas in his head. Actually, those ideas had been floating around for years but, busy with Scorpa, he didn't have the time to do anything with them. Now, with free time and a bit of capital, he went to work.

The Wakan 1640 starts with a single spine oil carrying frame, a 54 inch wheelbase, with inverted Ceriani forks mounted at 22 degrees. Power comes from a 100 cubic inch S&S V-Twin producing 115hp and 115 foot pounds of torque and those horses are moving a motorcycle thatweighs only 390 pounds with oil, no fuel. The engine sports a single Keihin flatslide carb that gets ram air through a blower type scoop situated above the airbox cover. The fuel tank is below the seat, molded to double as a sort of rear mudguard with the filler mounted on the tailsection. The engine has been dynamically balanced to reduce vibration plus the bar end weights help and the result is a much smoother bike than you might expect.

Braking chores go to a single 340mm front disc with a six piston caliper, which first road tester, Alan Cathcart, calls, "OK" but which might need to be tweaked a bit for serious stopping power. Cathcart also says the handling is similar to the Buell Firebolt XB12R but performance from the S&S V-Twin is definitely a step up. The first 15 bikes are scheduled to be produced by October for €28,000 ($35,000),but as production ramps up the price is expected to fall quite a bit. The next 100 bikes for 2007 will retain the Keihin carb but afterwards, fuel injection will be necessary to meet Euro 3 emissions requirements in 2008.

This is no prototype bike, it's ready for production now and pre orders are already trickling in. They've kept the bike totally under wraps during the three year development time and these first stories show a complete bike. This is another move, now by a European, in the same big torque, sport bike direction we've been talking about for the past year. If you're a bike builder starting out, you might want to forget the chopper direction and think sport bike. The Wakan 1640, ... I like it.

The production version looks the same as last year’s concept, it appears to only change its name. The motorcycle features a leather strapped chrome tank created using what Moto Guzzi calls an innovative metal particle deposition technology. The red frame was inspired by the earlier V7 Classic models, and is paired with the matching red hubs and swingarm. Technically, the V7 Racer is similar to the V7 Cafe. At the heart of the machine is a 744cc 90-degree V-Twin engine which delivers a slightly disappointing 49hp at 6800 rpm and 40 ft-lb of torque at 3600. Suspension is provided by a 40mm Marzocchi front fork and fully adjustable Bitubo rear shocks. The braking system comes from Brembo, which uses a 320mm disc at the front and a 260mm disc at the back.

Along with the 2011 Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200, Piaggio Group unveiled another bike, the 2011 Moto Guzzi V7 Racer. The model pays homage to the classic V7 Sport race bike of the ’70s. The V7 Clubman Racer was initially announced at EICMA show as a 2010 production model but Moto Guzzi’s parent company later said it was a mistake. Well, there’s no mistake this time, the bike enters production as a limited edition model.

BMW finally released images of its K1600GT and K1600GTL touring motorcycles when it pulled the cover of its new six-cylinder touring bikes at the INTERMOT Bike Show in Cologne, Germany. The Bavarian marque released introductory info on the Inline Six designs in July, but saved the full reveal for INTERMOT.

Stylistically the new Beemer sticks close to the concept drawings teased with its earlier announcement. A notable change from BMW’s previous touring models, the fairing shape doesn’t extend fully down the entire side of the bike. Instead the KT1600 leaves the engine sides exposed, revealing the 55-degree forward slant of the Inline Six.

The new powerplant claims peak power of 160 horsepower. The six-cylinder mill churns out 129 lb-ft of torque, with BMW touting 70% of the peak torque at 1500 rpm. The new mill weighs in at 226 pounds and is just 22 inches wide. Viewed from the front, the K1600GT looks no wider than its smaller-displacement K series kin.

The models unveiled at INTERMOT reveal a heavyweight touring platform. Integrated luggage and adjustable screen are obvious additions. The seating and passenger accomodations for the GTL tourer look downright Gold Wing-esque – the Flat Six-powered Honda its seeming head-to-head rival.

Triumph New Models

Triumph Motorcycles announced six limited edition 2011 models at its recent U.S. Dealer Conference. Included are two versions of its Thunderbird cruiser, including the Thunderbird SE and Thunderbird 1700 – the former featuring touring amenities and the latter coming with the optional big-bore kit standard (pumping displacement up to 1700cc).

Two special editions each for Triumph's Modern Classics and Urban Sport lines are also planned. The Bonneville Sixty is a commemorative edition of the 1960 Bonneville, priced at $8999, of which only 100 will be shipped to North America. The Bonneville T100 Black, as the name suggests, is a blacked out version of the T100, which sports a more retro style than the standard Bonnie, most notably via its wire-spoked wheels.

The Urban Sport line gets a Speed Triple SE, sporting Tornado Red paint and white center stripe, as well as seat cowl and flyscreen ($11,299). The new SE’s are rounded out by the Daytona 675 SE, with white bodywork and blue chassis, along with carbon fiber trim and new graphics overlay ($10,299).

While the addition of more special edition “SE” models continues a trend by the British marque, the boys at Hinckley have plans beyond modest SE tweaks (and higher MSRPs) to existing models. The press release, which also announces the looming sale of Triumph’s 100,000th motorcycle in the 15 years since returning to North America, gives hard numbers for a planned lineup expansion saying:

“Triumph currently offers 16 different models in three motorcycle families: Cruiser, Urban Sport and Modern Classic. That will grow to 23 models across seven motorcycle families by the end of 2012 and include categories where Triumph does not currently compete.”

What could those new categories include? A mid-displacement complement to the Tiger has long been rumored, even coming with a name – the Tiger Cub. The British marque is also notoriously bereft of a literbike to match its popular Daytona 675 supersport.

Honda brings back the birthday suit: First look at the bound-for-America CB1000R

It could be said that Honda created a piece of two-wheeled history in 1969 when the company first introduced the CB750KO as a musclebound, no-nonsense means to get yourself from Point A to Point B. Call it a naked sport bike, a power-cruiser or everything you need and nothing you don’t – no matter what the nomenclature, Honda made a performance motorcycle that happened to look great when it hit the showrooms wearing nothing more than absolutely necessary.

Honda announced that it will once again spare the nonsense and give the American market a naked sportbike known as the CB1000R, packing 998cc of inline four power. Honda calls it also “surprisingly versatile,” with a broad powerband and roomy cockpit. We shouldn’t forget fun either, as the big CB will put down 124 horsepower and 74 pound-feet of twist. Modern amenities to include a fully adjustable 43mm inverted fork and four-piston radial mounted calipers clamping a rotor on each side up front.

We are not sure if it was nostalgia, or loss of market share that ultimately landed the CB1000R on U.S soil, but at this point, it looks like Honda may be remembering who pays for their motorcycles… the customer, and we like what we see so far. Suzuki Crosscage & Biplane Concepts – Tokyo Preview

We’re quite fine thank you, meaning we haven’t mixed our socks with our underwear -yet… The Tokyo Show isn’t only about cars; it also hosts motorcycle and commercial vehicle premiers. Suzuki on its behalf will show off two motorcycle concepts, the Crosscage and the Biplane. We found a Japanese teaser press release on both concepts but it didn’t make much sense so we can only tell you that the Crosscage uses fuel-cells while the Biplane, which incorporates a V4 engine, draws its inspiration from airplanes.
